The lute pegs are made to order - please allow one week for the turning process. I use 1/30 taper for my pegs. If you want a peghead that is shaped differently than the models listed here, please contact me by email with a drawing or picture.
pegs are guaranteed to have a round shaft when they leave the workshop,
but as they are wood, different air moisture levels will affect their
shape. It is therefore recommended that you consider purchasing or
making a peg shaper, and using it after the pegs have had a chance to
adjust to your local athmospheric conditions, if you find their shank to
have turned oval. The pegs can vary in shank diameter about 0.1 mm -
0.2 mm and should be fitted individually - and be kept ordered during
the process - to have them all protrude the same distance from the
pegbox. This too can be corrected with a peg shaper, if you absolutely need them to have the exact same size.
The peg must only have friction at the hole of its wider end, and
should turn freely in the smaller hole, so use a drill bit that is just a
little wider to drill the smaller hole big enough. Most reamers are not small enough to make the smaller hole anyway.
The pegs are sold in different stages of completion:
- Direct from the lathe: shaped, sanded but the head not flattened
- As above, with the peg's head flattened to a concave surface
- As above, with polyurethane varnish applied to the head, carnauba+beeswax on the shank
